Persons with transsexualism, after sex reassignment, have considerably higher risks for mortality, suicidal behaviour, and psychiatric morbidity than the general population. Our findings suggest that sex reassignment, although alleviating gender dysphoria, may not suffice as treatment for transsexualism, and should inspire improved psychiatric and somatic care after sex reassignment for this patient group.

There is a lot to be said about those who classify themselves as transsexual. Mainly the issue at hand is the mental health and well being of the individual(s)

In some instances it is said that sex reassignment surgery is a necessary treatment for those who are trans. However as stated above, members of the medical field are claiming the (SRS) shouldn’t be classified as treatment as the mental health issues including but not limited to suicide stay the same before and after surgery in most cases. In addition, the risks from a common botched surgery are at hand as well.

Do you think that scientists and medical professionals should end (SRS) and fund and research more viable and beneficial options for those in the trans community?

Transgender medicine is a very complex and nuanced field with robust research and standards of care that have been developed. And if I'm fortunate enough to be confirmed as the assistant secretary of health I look forward to working with you and your office and coming to your office and discussing the particulars of the standards of care for transgender medicine."
