Why do we have to label people? You're GAY...I'm STRAIGHT...It shouldn't make a difference who you are or who you love...Labels SUCK!

I think mostly the label would be for convenance sake. If your gay hitting on a straight guy wouldn't be to your benefit. Likewise if your straight hitting on a lesbian woman would likely be a waste of time so that kind of information is helpful.
