Happiness?

Just read zbout the death at 99, of Stanley Baxter. An icon of British TV back in the 1960's, 1970's. Whzt struck me was he came out as gay in 2020 and stated that whilst many people were now happy to be gay he never was, and still wasn't, and still didn't want to be gay. How sad is that, and what does it say about a life led in the closet?

My goodness. That's so sad. I didn't realize that he only came out so comparatively recently. That would make him about 94 at the time!

what does it say about a life led in the closet?
I can't speak for everyone in the closet but coming out lifted a weight from my shoulders. I suspect that it would do so for many people; I think many people worry unduly about the consequences of coming out. I know I did. Then taking that final step of not changing back to trousers when going home took away a burden I hadn't consciously realized I was carrying.

Such a contrast between him and people like Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi

Here's a video of the two of them being a bit camp making mistakes in a rehearsal

I'm not going to say get out of the closet and you'll be happy. I think that people, regardless of their sexuality should think about what's impacting their happiness and look to what they need / can do to make them happier. And yes, for a lot of people being in the closet may be the issue, though just coming out may not automatically make you happier. However, maybe how happy you are and / or what's causing you unhappiness is something we should all consider.

It would have been a very difficult life having a sexuality he didn't enjoy.

Why would he want a personal thing that he didn't like, as public knowledge?

I would not like anything I hated about myself to be public knowledge.

@Zeusdelight Apparently his autobiography was originaly set to be published after his death, but at in 2020 he decided it was time. Who knows why.
