BBC 'Tracks Of My Years', with Susan Calman.

God, I've just had one of those moments.

In the show, host Vernon Kaye has a celeb and they talk through the music that has memories for them.

Susan is a Scottish Comedian and also a lesbian.

In it, she talks about going to a gay club for the very first time. Vernon says that it must be liberating for you and all the excitement.

Susan replies back that no, it actually wasn't...and that it made her so scared..

Hit me like a tonne of bricks.

All those thoughts and feelings, for me that came back.

Nervously going into 'Curzon's', all on my own. Must have been 21...22...quite nervous. Up the steps in - eventually - and through to the bar, playing loud dance music that just wasn't my thing at that point in my life....and having this girl...a redhead...with a mass of curls...just look at me and smile...

I nearly lost it. Crapping myself.

I've never been so terrified, up until that point, in my life.

Just watching everyone. Trying to keep to myself. Scared stiff.

I forgot all that until watching that show.

Fingers crossed,it's becoming more acceptable ( even saying just that sentence, shows how it probably isn't!) To be outwardly open about your sexuality, today. Alot more announce on here they're bi, anyway.. Different times back then for the both of you 😔

@MrVintage71 It wasn't so much that, but...processing it all...just that this woman was a 'proper' lesbian. Does that make sense?

Like...just starting Secondary School and then seeing all the 16 year olds that would be leaving that year. Very intimidating.

Just... intimidated by their confidence.

It's not always liberating and fabulous. Sometimes it just doesn't work.
