Depends on the program .. but I tend to disagree. Airline and hotel points from business travel and credit cards have funded, or partially so, several personal trips saving me thousands of $$. Credit card points from purchases I'm making anyway (groceries, gas, etc) have been used for many purchases of outdoor gear, etc.

Yes, they profit from them. But if you don't collect them, you are more at a net loss since they pass all the cost back into their goods. So your choice is either buying into them or not buying into them and paying the same cost (passed down equally in prices), so the choice is yours.
