My do older people even answer spam/scam phone calls?

I witnessed a customer yelling on her phone at a spam call.

Why do you even answer numbers you don’t know? I personally have my phone set up that unknown numbers get silenced.

I noticed my older family members answer them too… it’s weird. Just ignore them.

I always answer them, I like to play with them and wind them up. Some of them get extremely angry and abusive when they realise that I have been taking the piss. Makes me chuckle.
In this era, there are so many calls from unknown numbers, and it's difficult to recognize numbers you want to hear from.

It's called habit. If I don't recognize a number, and it calls me five times, I call back to see if it's something I need to know.
@Mamapolo2016 I guess it’s because people can text now and a generational thing. They can always text you their new number before? That would make things easier, so you can have it saved.

Goes back to before cell phones and caller ID
when the phone rang you answered
I know people who like to fuck around with those callers

I don't usually answer unknown numbers, but if I do, it's because I was waiting for a call that would likely come from a number I would not readily recognize.

It does surprise me though that anyone would ever engage a spam call. It makes me think that some of our elderly are either not fully aware of spammers or that are truly that lonely. 😞
I have an android phone, and, for unknown numbers, Google offers to screen the call for me. I almost always let it screen. The voice-rec screener seems to get rid of pretty much every spam call.

Rule of thumb: if I don't recognize the number (unless I'm expecting a call from someone who might have an unfamiliar #), I don't pick it up.

Normally no unless I am expecting a call from someone

Perhaps many are like me, not having a telephone that displays the caller's number. Preferably also your indexing name, so you don't have to try to remember umpteen genuine numbers. (Though the first digits should be a clue if it's from abroad.)

What's more important is how you respond to the call.

I don't suppose it's just "older" people who take these calls, either.
