On Monday night, a gunman opened fire at the main campus of Michigan State University, killing three people and injuring five. A manhunt followed that lasted several hours and which ended in the death of the suspect, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot according to police.
The gunman was 43 years old but had no known connection with the university. His motive remains a mystery according to the police. The police gave an update at an early morning news briefing about five hours after the shooting started at the large East Lansing campus approximately 90 miles northwest of Detroit.
Details of the events are still vague but Chris Rozman, interim deputy chief of the university police, said shots were fired in two locations. First, an academic building called Berkley Hall and secondly the Michigan State University (MSU) Union building.
Roznan said that three victims were killed and five were taken to hospital in Lansing. All of them were listed in critical condition. Rozman added the University was not aware of any threats made to the campus before the attack.
The name of the suspect has not been released and police said that they remained at a loss to explain the motive behind the shooting. “We have no idea why he came to campus to do this tonight.” Rozman told reporters.
Rozman also said the suspect “was contacted by law enforcement off campus” at one point. He added that “the scene is being investigated as a crime scene.” MSU officials on Monday night said that all classes and school activities would be canceled for 48 hours at the East Lansing campus.
