Why do pro-Gunists still defend guns despite all the mass shootings and school shootings?

It appears to me that the pro gun folks think that only good people have guns and make good decisions. They are so afraid of losing power to the people that get elected into office. They have no confidence in the democratic process. Only by putting a czar in charge would they feel safe when just the opposite would be true.
