Suspect in custody after deadly mass shooting at LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs

A 22-year-old gunman opened fire in a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs, killing five people and leaving more than two dozen injured before he was subdued by "heroic" patrons and arrested by police who were on the scene within minutes, authorities said Sunday.

The violence is the sixth mass killing this month and comes in a year when the nation was shaken by the deaths of 21 in a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

This is terrible that someone can have access to a gun and just walk into a place and open fire and do so much damage. The motive isn’t clear but it’s speculated that the club was targeted because it’s a LGBTQ2s+ nightclub.

My thoughts go out to all the people that lost loved ones last night.

What are your thoughts?

It's been a week and this one is fucking with me. A lot of trans friends have shared their incredible fear about just going out in public and how this has been spiked after this, and worsened by people literally saying this was a good thing or the gunman's father going "whew so long as he's not gay".

Like this is not a safe society to be queer and it doesn't matter if they put like, a gay kiss in a Disney movie or something. It's not getting better.

@CountScrofula I have heard that the shooter isn’t actually non-binary. He is quite homophonic and this defence team is using him being non-binary to garner sympathy.

I don’t care what his orientation is. He went into a public place and killed innocent people and wounded many others.

This is heartbreaking because things seem to be getting much worse in the USA. The home of the free 🙄.

@iamonfire696

Non-binary?
Garner sympathy?
There is no sympathy for murderers!!!
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@calicuz I don’t think there’s any sympathy for him but didn’t you see that it came out that his defence team claimed he is non-binary so it wouldn’t be deemed as a hate crime. That’s exactly what it is, a hate crime.

@iamonfire696

that's exactly what it is, and I don't think any jury will buy that.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@calicuz I sure hope not.

@CountScrofula
He killed five people and wounded over twenty more...
Weather or not it is a hate crime and with the highest probability it qualifies, it won't make a difference in the sentence...
The State of Colorado has no death penalty.
Regardless of the defence, he is not going to ever get out of jail when sentenced after he is convicted. The state has a pretty simple case to prove to gain a conviction and the defence has no effective wiggle room on mitigation at sentencing..

@pdqsailor1

Why is he not going to prison?
Carazaa · F
@calicuz He will get life in prison!
pdqsailor1 · 61-69, M
@Carazaa exactly....
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@pdqsailor1 @Carazaa @iamonfire696 I don't particularly care about the shooter or his punishment. This is more about the general social problem of LGBT+ people being treated as disposable lives.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@CountScrofula I agree with you. I have seen some pretty awful things said about LGBT+ people though.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@iamonfire696 Yeah that's what I'm saying.

Although acceptance is greater than ever, the resistance to that acceptance is also the most intense its been since maybe the 90s.

So although my wife's sibling can be out and trans and very visibly queer, they do so at risk of their own personal safety let alone the troubles it can cause with family and work and friends and what have you. And you know, being murdered by a random man.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@CountScrofula I know, it’s terrible. My brothers best friend is a trans woman. I am so happy she can be who she knows that she is but it’s heartbreaking that there are people that think she shouldn’t live because of it.
