Why do the majority of people not include gang shootings if this is an accepted definition of mass shooting?

The reality is gang shootings are why there are 200+ mass shootings a year in the US.

"Crime violence research group Gun Violence Archive, whose research is used by all major American media outlets, defines mass shooting as “FOUR or more shot and/or killed in a single event [incident], at the same general time and location, not including the shooter,” differentiating between mass shooting and mass murder [killing] and not counting shooters as victims."

I'm really looking forward to a certain individuals reply to this. Let the BS begin and as always attempt to make himself sound more educated than he really is.

i dont want it included since when u look up mass shootings, you want to know about mass shootings where the victims are random people and not part of some gang beef
Scubaguy027 · 46-50, M
@HunterDude Think about this for a sec. Would you include the ones NOT involved with gangs? I'm talking about maybe the gang banging fucks neighbors that are hit because of a chickenshit doing a driveby.
Scubaguy027 · 46-50, M
@MalteseFalconPunch that is correct. If you look at the list of mass shootings this year, gang shootings are included.
HunterDude · 26-30, M
@Scubaguy027 still no since its not their point to get innocent people. to me, mass shooting is where the point is to target random people
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
Because it's a fundamentally different sort of crime with a very different sort of intent and motive - and is often an act of terrorism.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@QuixoticSoul Though, it seems that terrorism is often excluded as well 🤷‍♂️
A mass shooting is an incident involving multiple victims of predominantly firearm violence. There is no widely accepted definition of the term “mass shooting”, although it is normally understood to exclude mass killings as a result of terrorist, authorised law-enforcement, or authorised military actions.[1] The United States’ Congressional Research Service acknowledges that there is not a broadly accepted definition and defines a “public mass shooting”[2] as an event where someone selects four or more people and kills them in an indiscriminate manner, echoing the FBI’s definition of the term “mass murder.”[3]
But anyway - it's the intent behind the event.

@QuixoticSoul the main reason I asked this question was because of the media. When they talk about mass shootings, they include gang violence in them.

Personally I wish there was a set standard in reporting and tracking this, from both the Law Enforcemenct AND Media perspective.

They are very different phenomena and there is no reason to introduce irrelevant data.
Scubaguy027 · 46-50, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow different phenomena, yes I agree 100%. My question is why does the media portray 200+ mass shootings this year when they INCLUDE gang shootings in the numbers.
@Scubaguy027 I would be curious to look into the sources. That would be strange and smells like a tactic to downplay the issue like Trump claimed it was a simple mental health issue that would somehow be solved if they hadn't closed asylums in the 60s and 70s many of which were the site of egregious abuses.
Scubaguy027 · 46-50, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow if you look at the Gun Violence Archive you will see it. Reading various articles from the major media outlets (wether you agree or disagree with them) Fox, CBS, MSN, a lot will reference this site. Not always, yet not uncommon.

Gang shootings are typically criminals targeting criminals with guns obtained illegally many of the shootings we see on the news are criminals targeting innocent people with guns obtained legally that's a pretty big difference to me regardless of the damn definition
NativeOregonian · 51-55
@WeighedDown Exactly
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
because a bunch of hoodrats getting mowed down in a drive-by with an illegally purchased/owned firearm in a "gun free zone"/democrat controlled city doesn't fit their political agenda... 🤔
NativeOregonian · 51-55
All you god damn racist assholes need to stop this bullshit, go fuck each other while watching your hitler films.
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
@NativeOregonian rhetoric favoured by white supremacists?. You know it's not just other races in gangs.. eg. white supremacists.

Criticising and looking at how mass shootings are defined is a good question as it can technically be the same thing. You're looking at it through a political lens.
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
@NativeOregonian I would say it's easier to call a mass shooting related to gangs as a gang shooting as it implies the intent, but if more than a few people die it's technically a mass shooting with criminal context.
Scubaguy027 · 46-50, M
@NativeOregonian what makes you think I'm a racist? I asked a simple question about a definition.
RogueLoner · M
Some guy in California recently killed four people and wounded two … with a knife. 4 or more qualifies it as a mass killing. Those victims are just as dead as a mass shooting.
There's an agenda here, because you can't hold off a corrupt government or police force with a knife.
