Why are people against gun ownership?

Mass shootings occur because of bullying and social isolation, wouldn't it be better to address that instead of trying to restrict gun ownership?
It's not a one or the other thing, and it doesn't have to be all or nothing.

This is a loaded question trying to assume people calling for more strict gun control are ignoring the cause of mass shootings. There is also a generalization as to the cause of mass shootings.
I am against the general population owning guns because most people are not trustworthy enough or have high enough intellect and weapons handling skills to safely carry a weapon. After 5 years active duty in the USMC and 2 combat tours in Iraq as well as a current job where I carry a gun 24/7 I still do not want them in my house. A gun's only purpose is to kill. That's not a power an average joe/jane should have, myself included.
@Msp940 I disagree. The U.S Constitution explicitly states that American citizens have "the right to bear arms". Even if they choose not to make use of this right, it still should exist. Restricting guns essentially means removing an important freedom which has been enshrined in American law.

Also, general gum crime has decreased...it's only mass shootings that have increased. This is most likely because of bullying within schools and other societal problems.

US gun crime is essentially most prevalent in socio-economically deprived areas, mass shootings are related to the prevalence of guns. Making basic guns/rifles look like something GI Joe would use, doesn't help.
@everythingisalreadytakenagain You should teach your kids not to play with matches, but you still shouldn't leave them lying around, especially when they're young.
@MistyCee Of course, but this doesn't address my contention regarding bullying and social isolation in American schools. Invariably all of the teens who commit mass murder are social outcasts.
@everythingisalreadytakenagain Well, Melania is on charge of stopping bullying.

It would be better to address the underlying reasons we have a gun worshipping culture, but solution-based thinking dictates removing the threat immediately while long-term solutions are crafted. Stricter regulation is one way of doing that.

look at the movies and the prevalence of guns as being a solution to life problems.
