The US government conducted secret bioweapons research in September 1950 by releasing several species of bacteria by spraying them into the air about two miles off the California coast in the Bay Area, then testing air and soil samples to see how far they migrated. At least 11 innocent US citizens were hospitalized with infections, and one person died. The outbreak was so unusual that it was written up in a medical journal at the time, but the incident was not explained until decades later.
