No jail time ???

A 15-year-old boy was convicted at Southampton Crown Court of raping a 15-year-old girl in an underpass on a first date and a 14-year-old girl in a field.

Another 15-year-old boy was found guilty of six counts of being involved in the rapes of both girls and a 14-year-old boy was found guilty of two counts of rape in the second incident.

Among other sanctions, the boys were given Youth Rehabilitation Orders and walked out of Southampton Crown Court with 11 rape convictions between them; most for physical rapes and the remainder for encouraging and filming the attacks.

Explaining his sentence, Judge Nicholas Rowland said: "I should avoid criminalising these children unnecessarily and understand the effects of their behaviour and support their reintegration into society."

He then emphasised their "very young" ages and said: "None of you need to go to prison today."

If these were your daughters what would you think of these sentences?

What is a Youth Rehabilitation Order ?

Sending them to an adult jail would probably make them worse, because of who they will meet.

@emmasfriend they do have secure units for the worst children, they could have gone to one of those

@MrAverage1965
That would have been better.
I suspect the YRO is a lot of psychiatrist waffle & probation.

Mental note - avoid Southampton unless accompanied

i have mixed feelings. Rape is an act of violence and needs to be dealt with, but jail could make things worse, the rapists needs help, but needs punishment as well.

@samueltyler2 For me at 14 and 15 they knew exactly what they were doing and that it was wrong. It seems there is a very high chance they will go on to offend again in the future.

@MrAverage1965 i agree and said so, but at that age going to a common jail would offer no remedistion, and almost definitely to repeat.

I would immediately think them wrong even though no relation of either the offenders or victims; but simply throwing them into jail could make the boys even worse.
