Shameful Sentences
One has to wonder who is directing District Court Judges to hand down lenient sentences.
Too often we see violent perpetrators committing offences with a maximum sentence of 10 years being given suspended sentences.
Parliament says there must be a separation of powers between the judiciary and government, though the judges are appointed on recommendation of the Cabinet.
Suspended sentences make a mockery of the justice system and it is the public that suffers because these thugs are let back on to the street.
It is the Parliament that makes and amends the laws, so make the minimum sentences higher and only grant suspended sentences for those crimes that do not involve violence against another person.
