Serious riots broke out in Zurich's 4th District on Halloween night. Several hundred people gathered on Langstrasse. Fires broke out, property was damaged, and emergency responders were attacked. The police deployed water cannons, pepper spray, and rubber bullets, according to a statement from the Zurich City Police.

Following calls on social media and relevant websites, several hundred people gathered at Piazza Cella on Langstrasse in Zurich around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday evening. The gathering was prompted by the events in France over the past few days and weeks.

The group split into several smaller groups and eventually made their way through District 4.
The group split into several smaller groups and eventually made their way through District 4.

At first, the participants mingled with the partygoers. Some were masked, wore safety goggles, or were dressed in Halloween costumes. Pyrotechnic devices were set off repeatedly.

Around 11 p.m., the group began moving down Langstrasse toward Helvetiaplatz. In the area where Langstrasse and Stauffacherstrasse intersect, dumpsters were placed in the street and set on fire. The city police moved in with water cannons and pushed the crowd back.

The group then split into several smaller groups, which made their way through District 4. At various locations, containers, e-bikes, and e-scooters were set on fire.

On Zwinglistrasse, the rioters also set a car on fire. Windows at the Stauffacher VBZ stop and at stores near Helvetiaplatz were also damaged.

The statement goes on to say that during the operation, police officers were repeatedly and violently attacked with fireworks, bottles, and rocks. The city police used water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets.

The demonstration had something of a “happening” atmosphere in the neighborhood where it began. People posed in front of others who were setting off fireworks to have their pictures taken, while others posed in front of burning barricades. Early Sunday morning, the city police reported that their operations had been hampered by numerous onlookers.

The professional fire department of Schutz & Rettung Zürich was called in to fight the various fires. The Zurich Cantonal Police also assisted the city police in their efforts.

Shortly after midnight, another incident occurred on Brauerstrasse. A patrol car had been dispatched to respond to a medical emergency when it was attacked by a crowd. The police vehicle was damaged in the incident. The officers were initially forced to retreat. Only then were they able to assist a teenager who had sustained serious leg injuries in an accident.

Around 1:30 a.m., the situation in District 4 calmed down. The extent of the property damage is not yet known. The Zurich City Police have launched an investigation.

The demonstration had not been authorized. It had been organized by far-left groups.

The Zurich Cantonal Police assisted the city police early Sunday morning and arrested two young men during the riots. According to the cantonal police, the two were carrying weapons and items used to conceal their faces.

The seized weapons were quartz sand gloves, as a police spokesperson clarified in response to a query from Keystone-SDA. These gloves are considered weapons because they amplify the impact of a blow.

The cantonal police caught the two Swiss men, aged 19 and 21, allegedly collecting objects at a construction site to use against the police later. In addition, they issued 18 expulsion orders.

The SP City of Zurich condemns the violence and vandalism “in the strongest possible terms,” as it stated in a press release on Sunday. “It is clear that the participants were only interested in causing property damage and provoking confrontation,” said President Oliver Heimgartner.
There is no place for such behavior in Zurich. Eticus Rozas, co-president of the Zurich City Greens, told the Keystone-SDA news agency that his party condemns senseless violence. He expressed concern that a small group is exploiting the youth protests in Europe—which also voice legitimate demands—to commit acts of violence.
