With that damn ICE business going on at my man’s workplace, I best make sure he knows his rights

The campus he works at — a Native American tribal complex — is going to be locked down for the remainder of the week after two ICE vehicles were unexpectedly spotted on campus today. Desmond works there as a groundskeeper and his department will be able to continue working like normal, but I just talked with him to make sure he knows what to do in the event that he’s approached by an agent while working. To remain calm and exercise his right to silence. If anything, inform them that he doesn’t have authority to allow access to work spaces or to provide any tribal documents if they request such. Goodness forbid if he’s detained, to refuse to answer any questions, don’t consent to any searches and demand to consult with an attorney. Most importantly, to not resist and explained how a false arrest being so until they get you for resisting arrest works. BS as it may be, it’s how it is.

Desmond was appreciative and it seemed like he learned a few things. I’m sure he’ll be fine and hopefully ICE doesn’t come back to his complex (or mine), but I dread to think of him being approached by ICE agents, especially since they don’t have a good track record for going about things civil-like. At least now, he’ll know what to do should the worst come to show. No matter what, I’ll make sure he’s okay and won’t ever let anything happen to him. I hope he knows that.

We all need to know our rights these days. The state of policing in America has changed dramatically in recent years.
