i visited someone in prison once. the whole thing, including processing, lasted just over an hour
Not long.
In and out a few times.
Longest amount of time was just over 2
dubkebab · 56-60, M
Only a year.Six months at a quite nice facility,as far as those places go.
It was not easy, but I'll say I emerged a better person.
I remain clean and sober 15+years later, and that beats the odds.
Could have been worse.
The DA kept insisting on 5 years in San Quentin...that would have been a whole different type of experience,I'd imagine.
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
A little over 3 weeks in juvenile detention in the early 1970s. It wasn’t great but could have been worse, it was a small facility only 14 guys. Picked out 3 like minded hippies and hung out with them for safety.
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
@BackyardShaman what got you in juvy?
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
@Jenny1234 I got caught with over an ounce of marijuana, a few seconal, and a few quaaludes. I had run away from home and was about 4 hours away so I was held in the facility for awhile, went to court at home.
BittersweetPotato · 31-35, F
Never been to prison.
Fran63 · 61-69, M
23 years

It was between ok and absolute hell. I didn't help myself on the first part, that's why there for so long.

When I decided I did want to get out then it was hell for a while as I had a bad rep and that didn't help me.

@BridgeOvertroubledWaters Yes I spent 1 year in prison. It was very hard and scary and it was awful. The affects of this event still haunt me today.

In reality, it was only about 2 and 1/2 years. Felt like forever.

The first year is the worst. You're literally plunged into a world where the vast majority of society's rules are inverted, and you're expected to just know them. Stupid and horrifying things are happening all around you, and you have to learn to ignore them. The only way to really do that is to learn how to just desensitize yourself to human suffering. You develop a really dark sense of humor.

The one respite I had from all the stupid people was the time I spent in solitary confinement for losing my temper with someone while doing my job on the kitchen serving line. They say solitary is the worst form of punishment, because it can drive you crazy. But that only matters if you care about your sanity. Let that go, and the time goes by so fast. I passed the time by designing a board game called "Department Of Corruption". I made some dice out of toilet paper, and then I made a little doll out of toilet paper. I played the game I designed with him, and he won four out of five games.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@dubkebab I think it helped that I couldn't stand most people there.
dubkebab · 56-60, M
@LordShadowfire You seem to be implying that the staff and inmates alike were a bunch of...

I'm not sure of the proper term. But I get what yer sayin'
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@dubkebab I am. The staff members who didn't have their heads up their asses were actually on the side of the hustlers and crooks. And the few good ones were too few to be effective.

Not exactly prison, but I spent 15 months in a group home because my mother chose her second husband over me, who often used me as a punching bag, she hated it when I'd fight back.
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
@NativePortlander1970 I’m so sorry. You did not deserve that. How is your relationship with your mom?
@Jenny1234 Thank you, strained cordial at best.
