Have you ever been arrested?

Multiple drunk driving charges until I finally got my act together by seeking help for depression.

Also three times for simply defending myself from attackers because in Ohio we had the Duty to Retreat law where it is illegal to defend oneself from an assailant(s) except in your home or car.

We now have the stand your ground law, but I'm too old and fat to be able to fight back now

@Disney Ayy I'm from Ohio too

@Disney Duty to retreat? What happens if the attackers don't let you retreat? That is so dumb.
@SatanBurger In my case I ran and slipped in the gravel allowing them to catch up to me. I stabbed one and the others fled.

I turned myself into the police immediately. They said I had alcohol on my breath, to go home, sober up, and turn myself in the next day so they don't have to report it.

I was arrested the next day when I turned myself in, but the case was dismissed. However, it stayed on my permanent record until I paid an attorney to have it expunged
Think of what happened at the capital riots where the law makers were hiding under tables.

It's because Washington DC has the Duty to Retreat law where it is illegal to defend oneself even in their own home or car.

If they had the Stand Your Ground law, the law makers could have wiped out all the people trespassing

@Disney Oh I still don't agree with Duty to Retreat because there's too many situations where you can't retreat but I see what you're saying with your second comment. It seems more political, I think they should have had both stand your ground and duty to retreat depending on situation. There's a difference when robbers are in your store just stealing (that's wrong and it's quite irritating that you can't beat the crap out of them as a store owner) but when those robbers come at you with a gun or a knife and you can't retreat but self defend yourself well it makes sense to have both with restrictions.

I think self defense cases should be best left up to the judge and then have checks and balances along with that to make sure the judge isn't overreaching.

It really makes more sense than having duty to retreat or stand your ground. People should go on a case by case basis.

I'm glad nothing bad happened to you though and you lived, I'm also glad the case was dismissed and they were able to use common sense. I think they should have immediately wiped your record though as it wasn't your fault to begin with. But glad you're okay.
@SatanBurger Even with the Stand Your Ground law in effect, criminals still have more rights.

For example, someone attacks you and goes to jail ... they have free attorneys, but if you want to sue them for damages, you have to pay for an attorney
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@Disney Oh yeah in some cases a robber has actually sued the owner of the person's house they broke into for damages. I thought that was ludicrous but they won. Law is great isn't it.

@Disney Many times, too, responding police officers don’t identify a victim if there has been a fight or altercation and just arrest anyone involved.
@toddr13 Yes, they usually arrest the person still standing
toddr13 · 46-50, M
@Disney So true, even if they were attacked.
