Grammatically, it's correct — English has a perfectly fine neutral singular pronoun, it. That said, it is almost universally reserved for inanimate objects, animals and very young humans.

@PiecingBabyFaceTogether A lot of people don't like using "it" in regard to people, as it is seen as dehumanizing and objectifying. Although the singular "they" has been around for centuries — Shakespeare used it — and is generally accepted in casual language, it is still not completely accepted in more formal writing. For a long time, the general advice has been to recast the sentence so that it's plural, but that often creates its own problems.

“He or she” would be better but in a woke world perhaps the writer is allowing for disparate pronouns.
