The most convoluted word origin I'm aware of.
"Washer", the tool placed before screws, has unknown origins. People only speculate that it's called a washer because it's thin and shiny, like the surface of water; sharing origins with the word water & wash (old German "wasser").
That's the most non-literal word origin I know of, and I know a lot of word origins. 😆
