A Question for the Brits here…

If you ever watched Buffy The Vampire Slayer, did James Marsters (Spike) use even a passable English accent ? Especially considering that he often worked alongside Anthony Head (Giles) who is actually English ?

The usual totally not real accent.😀
If you come to Britain you would be hard pressed to hear what Americans think is a British accent.
Given we have loads of regional ones-like mine!

@bijouxbroussard Dick Van Dyke still gets razzed about his Cockney accent in Mary Poppins.

I saw him on a talk show a few years ago, where he explained that he was given an Irish voice coach, who assured him, "This is how they say it!" 😂
@DrWatson most people in London don't speak like this

@TheSirfurryanimalWales Actually, while that sounds to me like an authentic British accent, it sounds somewhat different from my impression of "London English".
That was such a good show. Angel too.
@DarkHeaven I really enjoyed them.
@DrWatsonTo me the guy doesn't have an accent at all.
If he hadn't said he was from London I could never have placed where he is from.
I wonder how the different American accents ( such as Kyra Sedgewick uses in The Closer) sound to an American?
@TheSirfurryanimalWales this somehow got detached from where it should have been

I watched all of those as they aired. I didn't know he was an American until much later.

Anthony Head was also putting on a voice. He doesn't talk posh in real life.
@Jacko1971 My favorite Fake Brit was the original Magnum PI’s Higgins, played by Texas-born John Hillerman. I’m not kidding, he sounds like Englishmen I’ve met.

@bijouxbroussard he was another one. I only found out about him recently.

@bijouxbroussard I loved Higgins. He had a life well lived.

His accent is decent tbh.

The worst one I can remember is Don Cheadle in the Ocean's movies. It was so bad that people were laughing in the cinema.
@Burnley123 That’s a shame, he’s a talented actor otherwise.

Not really. Accents vary depending on where you live. Even then there's differences.
@Purplerain78 I know there are several, just like there are so many different U.S. accents. I always wondered if he sounded even close to one of them.

He was convincing as a British male to me, but because he was small and annoying

I miss that and Angel. They need a good remake.
@Jacko1971 Agreed !
@Jacko1971 I thought that about BattleStar Galactica but ended up loving the reboot way more than the original. I think it very much depends on how it’s done. But I’m okay with them leaving it alone too.

@DarkHeaven i agree Battlestar Galactica was very good. It had a different feel to the original which was a bit.more camp.
