My workplace called me on short notice because they needed someone who knows Spanish
This was earlier this week when a carrier showed up to our department (procurement) who knew very little English. So they called me as their first choice as interpreter, for whatever reason, and put me on the phone with the guy. The only problem was the guy was actually speaking Portuguese. I could understand bits and pieces of what he was saying because the languages are similar enough, but I don’t know Portuguese. I told my co-workers this and they went scrambling to find someone on campus who could interpret for them, which they should have done in the first place. I'm on maternity leave, dammit!
