Is Spain real?

I know a man from the U.S. who married a woman from Spain. Their daughter is bilingual. She grew up in the US but has spent so much time in Spain that she feels at home there as well.

So it is particularly hilarious that she of all people found this posted somewhere online:

Wonder if that person had heard of the people from Spain who refer to themselves as "Spaniards" ?

One other thing that puzzles me is how some people call all Spanish-speakers "Latinos" now. They include Brazilians, even though the primary language there is Portuguese.

They don’t seem to know the difference between Spaniards and Portuguese, from the European countries of Spain and Portugal, vs. the people from the countries in the Americas that they colonized.

The latter are now the descendants of those blended with the indigenous people they encountered and the African slaves they brought with them.

@bijouxbroussard I think we get the word Latinos from the fact that Spanish and Portuguese are both Romance languages, meaning they derive from Latin, which was spoken by Romans.
@LordShadowfire Yeah, but when you fill out paperwork asking if you are "Latino", that’s not what they’re looking for. 😉

@bijouxbroussard I'm reminded of the blonde haired blue-eyed gentleman from South Africa who filled out a form identifying himself as African-American.
@LordShadowfire He can legitimately claim "South African-American".
Most South African immigrants in the US are white people of European origin. Of the 82,000 South Africans living in the US between 2008 and 2009, about 11,000 of them were Black South Africans. In the 2000 Census, 509 South African Americans reported their ethnic origins as Zulu.

The majority of these immigrants are English speaking, with a moderate proportion of these being South African Jews. In the US, South Africans in general — both white and black — live in the US individually, rather than in communities of South African Americans. The highest number of South Africans in the US live in California, notably Los Angeles County, Orange County and San Diego, while smaller populations reside in the Mid-Atlantic and the Pacific Northwest.

@bijouxbroussard Yeah, I think he did it because there was some sort of specific benefit he was going for, which made it a little bit deceptive.
@LordShadowfire I’d love to know what "benefit" he was expecting to get…police at his door ?
