I really don’t like it when people engage me in Spanish around those who don’t understand

At work, I just had someone from another department speak to me in Spanish since he knows that I know it, but it was around my assistant who doesn’t know Spanish. I was responding to him in English and repeating what he said aloud, trying to give him the hint to converse with me in English. I get if you’re just out in public and conversing with friends or family, but in a work setting around your co-workers who don’t understand, it’s inappropriate.

I don’t mind if they talk to me in Spanish when it’s just me around or with others who understand, but I’ve had to tell other co-workers straight up that it’s rude to speak in a language that others present don’t understand while you’re at work. I’ve had people talk shit about me in Spanish right in front of me thinking I don’t understand what they’re saying and I’m sure it happens elsewhere! Not around me, though. That’s for damn sure.

I used to work with two Romanians who did this -everyone got annoyed but I used to love listening to them even though I didn’t understand it
