Languages that are endangered now have a chance of dying. People are getting better at preserving languages though so idk how many will die/become lost. English will be the dominant language for the foreseeable future. I can't really see Chinese taking over, given that their dialects aren't even mutually intelligible with each other.

@deadgerbil neither is English if you listen to Cajuns or people from Northern England :P

Chinese will grow due to population
But
The reason it’s hard for Chinese to take over the world is due to the fact it’s extremely hard to learn.
Such as Arabic will continue to grow due to population and perhaps a small religious factor But in the big picture it might be hard for it to actually take over due to once again it’s difficulty and wide variety.
English became dominant around the world for many reasons but one main one would be that it’s easy and can function as an international language

This is merely my opinion
Not referring to any studies

@basilfawlty89 reminds me of this. I was lost listening to it by itself but can make it out fine when reading a comment that provided a transcript

@Moon3624 Yeah Chinese is other worldly with its difficulty. You can learn Chinese in school and think "I'm going to visit China" just find out you're surrounded by people who speak a different dialect and you can't understand anything aside from writing.

I wonder how much the Chinese population will continue to grow. Generally, as countries become more developed, they begin to level off and tend to shrink. Japan is an extreme case of that where their population decrease and aging population is becoming a real issue

@deadgerbil I clicked on this thinking "hehe I'm Irish, this will be easy!"

It was not easy...
