Do Americans and Brits are speaking the same language?

I don't know why Americans called football as something like rugby while soccer is football as many Europe and Asian countries.
Wait, I list the words..
It gets me mixed up.

Lift=Elevator?
Trousers=Pants?
Holiday=Vacation? They are same meaning. How can you be confused?
Football=Soccer
Bin/Dustbin=Trash can?
Autumn=Fall?
Toilet=Restroom? How can you rest in a toilet? Hmm. 馃
Aluminium=Aluminum?
Petrol=Gas?

Etc..

Blimey, I need to learn American English.

A bit of explanation.

Here, if you ask someone for a lift, you are asking for a ride in their car.

A holiday is a period of time that gives you the opportunity to take a vacation without losing pay.

Here in the US, when a man removes his trousers, he is often breathing in short pants.

@Mamapolo2016 Oh my Lord, you did it again. My head hurts.

Why not choose "hey, need a ride?" Instead lift?

Holiday is vacation.

We called shorts or trunks.
Gaah.

Okay, I am going to watch Netflix now.
Mamapolo2016F
@iamelijah Bottom line - it's because we're no longer Brits.
Mamapolo2016F
@adorbz Then why is an elevator a lift? Specificity aids communication.
basilfawlty8931-35, M
@Mamapolo2016 we also say lift here in South Africa.
Mamapolo2016F
@basilfawlty89 And that's fine with me.
adorbz26-30, F
@Mamapolo2016 i mean they鈥檇 be used in completely different contexts 馃槄 I am never gonna say I need a lift when I鈥檓 on the top floor and someone鈥檚 gonna be like uhhhh but how would an Uber get up here 馃馃槤
Mamapolo2016F
@adorbz Never underestimate a drunken Uber-er.
