I Love Foreign Languages
I can speak conversational Japanese (not fluent) but I really want to learn Russian. The main reason being that I have a Russian neighbor (a 70+ year old woman) who greets me every day in Russian and even chats me up, just for kicks maybe. She's delightful.
A perfect example of our everyday conversations is like this:
Me: (carrying laundry) Good afternoon!
Neighbor: (also in English) Good afternoon! (switches to Russian and points at my laundry basket, clearly asking me if I'm about to do laundry)
Me: Yeah, today is laundry day.
Neighbor: (nods head and continues speaking to me in Russian, throwing in some odd gestures)
Me: ...Yes?
Neighbor: (sees the quarters in my hand, starts to speak more rapidly)
Me: Oh I know, right? Three whole dollars for one load of laundry! That's insane!
Neighbor: (laughs and falls into step next to me)
Me: (points to the sky) Nice weather, huh?
Neighbor: (also looks at the sky and responds in Russian)
Me: Yeah, too hot. (fans myself) Not a fan of hot weather.
Neighbor: (laughs and also fans herself)
Me: Welllll...I guess I better get this laundry done. See you later?
Neighbor: (nods her head)
Me: Okay then. Goodbye!
Neighbor: (in English) Goodbye!
We then part ways and I'm getting pretty desperate to learn Russian at this point just so I can carry the conversation better. I think I'll start with greetings and work my way up to basic phrases.
