Also there's a difference between being a Jew and being Jewish.
Sadly many people don't understand that being against the slaughter of 1000s of Innocents doesn't make someone anti-semetic.

I think many of us know there’s a difference between Jews and Israel, but there are many people who want you to think they’re the same thing. It’s a problem if you tie your identity to a nation because then you can’t criticize that nation or its government or its army without criticizing an entire ethnic group. There are many Jews who are harsh critics of Israel too. To me they are not the same thing and I would never judge Jewish people in general based on what Israel does.

@WestonTexan I appreciate how you see this!

I am not Jewish myself, but I have friends and family members who are. Many of them have disagreed with some of the things Israel has done as a country, and so I do understand that difference.
My family is originally from the South, and recently I was told the story of an incident where the lives of my paternal grandfather and his brothers were saved by members of the local Jewish community. This happened over a hundred years ago, and to this day my father will never hear anything unkind said against Jewish people.

I'm Jewish but don't feel any sort of connection to Israel. I feel more connected to where I grew up in NY more so. I don't have anything against Israeli people in general but I do condemn the way their government treats people , especially non jews .
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
It's perhaps a little tangential but.my experience as a crossdresser is similar: the vast majority of people treat me well despite what some loudmouths with access to the media would prefer.
I think this applies to most people, most of the time.

@ninalanyon That's a really interesting comparison, thank you.

@Miram says

Conflating between the ethnicity, religion and israel ...
Yes, that conflation is the key problem. Opposing the policies of the nation of Israel should NEVER be conflated with opposing the religion of Judaism nor the Jewish people. That conflation is just a propaganda trick to silence criticism. This meme is how I often oppose that conflation.

I have no problem at all with Jews. I don’t pretend to understand your life but I like people and there is nothing in my life that tells me I have to dislike others.
ThePatientAnarchist · 61-69
@tobynshorty If only everyone thought the way you do!
ThePatientAnarchist · 61-69
And another such experience just now: a guy walked up to me in the library, said "shalom!", and showed me his Star of David tattoo. Not sure if he is Jewish (and ignoring the traditional rule against tattoos) or just super Jew-friendly. Either way, another nice encounter.

I think disapproval of Netanyahu's incomprehensibly atrocious handling of the situation is very separate from disapproval of Jews, just as disapproval of Putin or Xi or KJU or DJT doesn't mean one disapproves of Russians or Chinese or North Koreans or Americans across the board...I hope.
ThePatientAnarchist · 61-69
@SomeMichGuy I hope so too.

I'm pro-Palestine, that don't mean I have anything against Jews. Religion is not committing genocide, evil people are.

God made a covenant with Abraham, and said, "I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
I support Israel and the Jewish people. I love them so much I married one (my wife).

American here. I'm a partner in a metal fabrication business in North Toronto Canada.
My Jewish-Canadian friends and colleagues who live in Toronto have observed an increase in anti-semitism recently. There have been shootings at temples and schools and the Mayor of Toronto refuses to address the anti-semitism directly. It's dangerous to be Jewish in the city of Toronto Canada atm. I cannot say for certain the rest of Canada. Anecdotally I heard from residents of Montreal Canada that there is open hostility towards the large Jewish diaspora there.

Taking sides from afar is a strange practice I steer clear of.

I guess it depends on how you feel about ethnic cleansing.
ThePatientAnarchist · 61-69
@Pitchblue Care to clarify that comment? Assuming you are against ethnic cleansing, and I am guessing you see Israel's actions in Gaza as an example of that -- then what?
DogMan · 61-69, M
Can a Jew be pro-Hamas and/or Anti sematic?
ThePatientAnarchist · 61-69
@DogMan Well, Benjamin Netanyahu was openly pro-Hamas for years, in the sense that he supported their existence in various ways in order to keep the Palestinian population divided. This has been well documented.
As for antisemitism, there is internalized antisemitism just like there is internalized racism. So both are possible...

@ThePatientAnarchist I think we all wish that October 7th never happened. Since they do not want to
surrender, it looks like they will fight to the last man.

you probably just haven't heard anything from the haters yet. they're out there
ThePatientAnarchist · 61-69
@StygianKohlrabi oh I know they are, but it seems to me they are not as prevalent as some of us fear.

@ThePatientAnarchist I met a black dude at Starbucks and we talked for a while and he saw I was studying Hebrew and asked it I was a Jew. He said it was cool I was learning Hebrew. So he was friendly. but Not everyone is going to reveal their true feelings if they are antisemitic.

@Diotrephes I admit that putting quotations like these alongside the actual choices and actions of the Israeli government in recent years leads to grim conclusions. I still hope for better.

OK, look at the situation. The Zionists invaded the West Bank. They are currently destroying Gaza and attacking Lebanon and Iran. They will soon attack Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, northern Saudi Arabia, and Egypt to the Nile. At which point will you stop hoping for the better?
