Being visibly Jewish

Is antisemitism at a dangerous point in Canada?
There certainly is a lot more visible support for the Palestinian cause(s), and denunciation of Israel, than there was two years ago. I know many Jewish people who feel personally attacked when they see a poster or banner or graffiti saying "Free Palestine" or "from the river to the sea", etc. This is because they have been brought up feeling a strong connection with Israel, as part of their own identity.
However, a survey last year found that non-Jewish Canadians were developing more negative attitudes toward Israel but generally still feeling positive toward Jews. And that fits with my own experience.
I wear a yarmulka everywhere, and virtually all the reactions I get are positive. Just today a random middle-aged White guy said "hey, shalom! That means 'peace', right?" One evening a while back, a random young Black guy said "I like the yamulka! You know what I always think of? All those Nobel prizes! You people have done a lot for the world." And another while back, on campus, a young Indigenous woman said, "You're Jewish! Do you know any Jewish doctors or lawyers?" (I told her the ones I know are married and she was disappointed!)
This is not a proper statistical study, but my own experience does give me the feeling that a lot of people still like us Jews :)

I think many of us know there’s a difference between Jews and Israel, but there are many people who want you to think they’re the same thing. It’s a problem if you tie your identity to a nation because then you can’t criticize that nation or its government or its army without criticizing an entire ethnic group. There are many Jews who are harsh critics of Israel too. To me they are not the same thing and I would never judge Jewish people in general based on what Israel does.

@WestonTexan I appreciate how you see this!

I'm Jewish but don't feel any sort of connection to Israel. I feel more connected to where I grew up in NY more so. I don't have anything against Israeli people in general but I do condemn the way their government treats people , especially non jews .

I think disapproval of Netanyahu's incomprehensibly atrocious handling of the situation is very separate from disapproval of Jews, just as disapproval of Putin or Xi or KJU or DJT doesn't mean one disapproves of Russians or Chinese or North Koreans or Americans across the board...I hope.

@SomeMichGuy I hope so too.

Also there's a difference between being a Jew and being Jewish.
Sadly many people don't understand that being against the slaughter of 1000s of Innocents doesn't make someone anti-semetic.

God made a covenant with Abraham, and said, "I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

I support Israel and the Jewish people. I love them so much I married one (my wife).

I'm pro-Palestine, that don't mean I have anything against Jews. Religion is not committing genocide, evil people are.

Taking sides from afar is a strange practice I steer clear of.

you probably just haven't heard anything from the haters yet. they're out there

@StygianKohlrabi oh I know they are, but it seems to me they are not as prevalent as some of us fear.
@ThePatientAnarchist I met a black dude at Starbucks and we talked for a while and he saw I was studying Hebrew and asked it I was a Jew. He said it was cool I was learning Hebrew. So he was friendly. but Not everyone is going to reveal their true feelings if they are antisemitic.

@Diotrephes I respectfully disagree. That's going too far into conspiracy theory for me to find it plausible.

I respectfully disagree. That's going too far into conspiracy theory for me to find it plausible.

I base my opinion of what Zionists have publicly stated about the issue.

"The past leaders of our movement left us a clear message to keep Eretz Israel from the Sea to the River Jordan for future generations, for the mass aliya, and for the Jewish people, all of whom will be gathered into this country."
Yitzhak Shamir

"We walked outside, Ben-Gurion accompanying us. Allon repeated his question, What is to be done with the Palestinian population?' Ben-Gurion waved his hand in a gesture which said 'Drive them out!"
Yitzhak Rabin

"Even today I am willing to volunteer to do the dirty work for Israel, to have everyone hate us, to pull the rug from underneath the feet of the Diaspora Jews, so that they will be forced to run to us crying. Even if it means blowing up one or two synagogues here and there, I don’t care."
Ariel Sharon

"If I knew that it would be possible to save all the children in Germany by bringing them over to England and only half of them by transporting them to Eretz Israel, then I opt for the second alternative."
David Ben-Gurion

@Diotrephes I admit that putting quotations like these alongside the actual choices and actions of the Israeli government in recent years leads to grim conclusions. I still hope for better.
