Right after the Revolutionary War, Ethan Allen went to Britain to discuss relations between the new country of the United States and its former colonial overseer. Everywhere he went, the British people sneered at how rough and uncouth the American was.
At one dinner with an English lord, Allen excused himself to use the privy, and noticed a portrait of George Washington was hanging inside. Upon his return to the table, his host asked what he thought of Washington's portrait being placed there. Allen said it was a very good placement and he heartily approved of it. His host was astounded and asked why.
"Because it does its job," said Allen. "Everyone knows, nothing makes an Englishman shit faster than the sight of George Washington."
