Is there a difference in the way Alawites practice from Twelver Shi'ites?

Are they a different subsect like Salafism is for Sunni Islam?

Yes. They are a distinct sect. Not a scholar or anything but I do know that they went off in different directions a long time ago.

But no they are not to the degree of say Sunni Islam.

Sunni and Shia can be roughly compared to say Catholic vs Protestant in Christianity in the sense that the two big groups have points in common by there are multiple flavour within each grouping.

It is hard to get more specific without getting really into the weeds.
