I used to dread Ramadan for having to hide so much. Now that I am in Canada, I wait for it. Feels liberating to eat publicly, but also, many people just assume that I am Muslim knowing where i come from. I like making a point, it is like a silent announcement that I am not.

It does cater to insecurities and play on divisions. Then again, everything can. They are making intentional choices, and it is the majority..which is why they do nothing about it even when they say they are progressive. They absolutely give zero effs about the injustices other groups face.
Unfortunately I do have to care about that in Canada too and other western countries. It needs pointed out because there is general misconception that Muslims elsewhere are more open minded. They definitely are not. In some instances, they are even worse because the victim is completely cut off from the rest of their family.
Such as when women marry abroad and all they get to interact with are their control freaks husbands

@Miram I have always noticed that Muslims in west countries are actually more conservative. I’ve noticed that before even immigration via interactions on EP. I had that impression that they would be more progressive but I was always surprised that it was the opposite. I have a friend here who comes from an Islamic background, she told me her husband used to drink and be so casual with religion when they were back home in their Muslim country, but once they moved to Canada, he got influenced by his new Muslim friends here and became rigid and changed. It is a bit counterintuitive that people would regress in a free country but if you think about it, it kinda makes sense. Why? People just fee insecure here with everything allowed so they hold onto religion more tightly. When I said I didn’t care, I meant that they have bo power over me personally. But indeed on a larger scale, they are gaining power snd they are affecting others who choose to form close connections with them, like my friend for example. I also blame the left wing for enabling Islamists so much in the west. No I am not a right winger, but I am also capable of criticizing the left and they have been screwing up a lot in this regard recently.

Same, and to be honest I feel bit resentful and betrayed by many left wingers.
They used to harass me for simply criticizing Islam, even here in SW. Some of us were risking our lives owning our differences and still have to deal with being demonized and targeted from all fronts.
Still do.
And when you stand your ground and thrive despite all of that, they want to be counted as allies. And give you excuses such as not knowing enough about Islam, or that the expense of criticizing is taking away from the attention spent on bigotry towards muslims..no bish, what is actually happening is that you want to sacrifice me. You want to sacrifice the minorities within the minorities but not up to you!!
Will they understand that victims can be oppressors also? I am at this point convinced otherwise. Simple one track narratives prevail in western left wing politics. I learnt that i am better off not to count myself similar or hope that shared values are beyond pretenses to them.
We are the people who have to stand up against unjustice towards muslims. But we aren't going to get sacrificed for it.

If there is a reason to party, I will party with my solid friend Miram, she knows who cool and not, I go with her and in the words of a song I shared "I don't care, I love it"
