Fondle her? You're using terms to describe a 20th century Catholic Priest to describe a 7th century situation.

This probably refers to them pouring water over themselves from the same source. Bathing in the desert, which involves using towels, is quite different from soaking bath tubs.

He probably married her when she was 9 or 10, but it fits the practices of the time.
