No, it is actually a peaceful religion, with the majority of followers actually practicing what is preached.
The radicals get all the attention from the media which is always the case.
Ask any Muslim on the street about a "Holy War" and they'll have no idea what you're talking about.

Mohammed wasn't financed and trained by the U.S. Government.

@calicuz It isn't usual that a 'religion' is founded by a man of war promoting a political, conquering ideology. A man who executes prisoners, instructs his men to rape female captives and trades slaves

A great resource are ex Muslims.
Watch out for tricky apologists and sites that whitewash mass executions as "the Jews knew they had been really bad and therefore begged to be beheaded"
Or, "Muslims treated slaves like members of the family."
Look into current laws where Sharia is applied, such as apostasy laws in many Islamic countries and their origins in the behavior of the 'prophet'
Be aware of the importance of the hadith for the majority of Muslims and how that impacts the application of things like Sharia law
