Be considerate to your insect friends, encounters like these might not happen for a lot longer
I was strolling along the side of the street and noticed a luna moth struggling in the heat, disoriented on her back, probably also affected by the chemicals being used to clean the roads.
They have a reputation as endangered even if they aren't in most places. Had I not been the one to encounter her, she would've been run over or eaten by someone's dog (people here are extremely excessive with dogs). I gave her some of my bottled water to perk her up enough to carry her somewhere.
Would you believe though that she didn't mind being carried places and was very photogenic too?
The area where I was is a small residential block surrounded on all sides by roads, and based on her stumbling, I could see people were being excessive with the road maintenance. I was afraid she'd end up either run over, eaten, or dying under the heat. I ended up doing my best to carefully carry her up a quarter mile to find her the one orange lily that isn't on someone's property.
After waiting a few minutes to make sure she didn't stumble and end up succumbing again, I was thanked with her smile of approval.
When people don't always know what they're doing, the little things always help.
