If you own your company name do you have to buy the domain with your name? Will you still own it? [I Design Websites]

I have many questions and helping a friend build one. I've looked online for some answers, but I have more questions.

Where do you go to register your domain name.

If you use a website builder like wix, etc. Will they own the name?

Do you have to pay for a name you already own once it becomes a domain name?

Registering a Domain name, Hosting a website and Developing a website are all three different things, and you can use the services of different people for each thing.

First you need to select a domain name for yourself, like mydomainname.com. The domain name should be available, means it should not be already registered by someone else. You can check that and register on godaddy.com You will need to pay yearly to the registrar just to keep the name registered with you, even if you don't create a website.

Next you need to develop and host your website. For development you can take service of any professional like me(just kidding, I don't have time for that). Or you can try developing by yourself.

Hosting is where all the data and code of your website is kept. You have to configure under DNS zone settings of your domain (with your registrar) the address of your website host(say for example, hostgator.com).

You can take, all the services from one service provider also like, GoDaddy.

Hope it's clear to you now.

@ABCDEF7 here’s a great response!
You have to pay for a domain name, every year.

Website builders like wix does gives you options to purchase a custom domain as a yearly subscription.
You can purchase a domain from providers like GoDaddy and then host it in Wix.

Do you have to pay for a name you already own once it becomes a domain name? - I don't get this. If you have already purchased a domain then you can use it on any hosting provider.

You can register whatever you wish as a domain name so long as it isn’t already registered 🙂

You can use the name of your company when you set up an account at your web storage provider.
"mycompany.com" – unless the name is already taken by someone else.
