Not as good as many think.

For instance this site has figured a way to ban VPN users.

VPN is only as good as the receiving site. Once on any site you don't know where the data goes. Believe me it's not through another VPN provider.

Database are most often on different servers than the websites. This is why the SSL format is so important. The s in https is SSL, Secured Socket Layer.

Yet even then you have no idea if yet site is transmitting received data to their own databases through SSL. It's supposed to be standard, but it's not enforced.
