Hard to make any sort of comparison, really.
I suppose one big difference was that all your "friends" were people you knew personally, not also (or mainly!) remote strangers hidden behind nicknames and who simply happen to share your tastes or opinions.
Another was that because you could not send "instant" messages back and forth, you did not risk developing a phobia about being incommunicado even temporarily, nor worry about not having immediate replies.
