Age verification for online services - social media, online dating, porn, email, banking, government, etc. - a backdoor way to push digital ID ?

Sure looks like it to me.

What do you think?

Why would you need a "Government" digital ID for banking? Or access government services for that matter?

@Northwest Our federal government is trying to make it so you can't access federal government services online using the 'My Gov' portal without digital ID for people newly registering to access things like ATO (tax), human services (Centrelink, Child Support), Medicare, etc. unless they accept digital ID.

Banks will eventually do it as part of the full digitisation of financial systems.

Insurance companies will eventually require it.

Job applications will eventually require it.

Currently the '100 pts of ID' process is still the norm, but that's gradually changing.

State governments will eventually stop issuing physical license cards and make everyone get digital licenses which are a step closer to integration with federally-mandated digital ID systems.

@zonavar68 What is My Gov' portal?

What do you think a 'digital ID' is?

@Northwest https://my.gov.au - the portal to access australian federal government (and some state gov) services online. From the site:

"Access government services

With a myGov account, you can access services from:

Apprenticeships Services
Australian Bureau of Statistics
Australian Taxation Office
Centrelink
Child Support
Department of Health Applications Portal
Department of Veterans' Affairs
HousingVic Online Services
Individual Healthcare Identifiers service
Medicare
My Aged Care
My Health Record
National Cancer Screening Register
National Disability Insurance Scheme
National Redress Scheme
State Revenue Office Victoria
Unique Student Identifier (USI)
Victorian Concessions and Allowances
Workforce Australia
Your Career."

Digital ID is a certified digital credential validated by a government agency to use for accessing products and services where a person's individual identity needs to be confirmed beyond reasonable doubt.

The darkside is that being an online thing, all uses of the ID get logged/tracked and form another layer in the volumes of personal info that governments and businesses (and by inference criminals, etc. as well) can have access to. Another realm of privacy removed.
