What is with this Wikipedia needs money?

I always see those messages, now it's something like, Wikipedia still can't be sold, something along the lines of if you gave $2.75 and it will be too late to help in their year-end fundraiser. Sooo is this something they just do every year or if Wikipedia doesn't get money it shuts down? It's not clear on the website.

They don't want to use commercials so they're relying on the public to fund them.

@twiigss The funds go to the wikimedia foundation of which some portion goes into Wikipedia servers maintenance and etc and other wikimedia projects.

@Longpatrol Yeah that's kinda what I was thinking, like website maintenance mostly. If I had the money to donate I would. As much as I use the site.

@twiigss When you get enough money, there's a donation link on the sidebar of wikipedia itself, no need to rush.

@Longpatrol Yeah I was looking at it earlier. Money for me is very hard to obtain so yeah, in rough times right now.
