Emails get lost

I email a few people and one particular old friend constantly never receives them , or when I pull him up on it he says he replies and it’s me not checking spam or that I haven’t sent them . No issues with any other people . Don’t feel I can keep asking do you get my emails as it looks pathetic.
Do emails get lost constantly or is this just an excuse to not bother with friendship .
