Why is everything a subscription these days?

I try to buy something online and next thing I see is them trying to charge me a monthly fee, I just saw an unknown charge of £19.9 on my online bank account luckily they blocked it, but what's strange is it says grocery, I didn't order any online groceries today!!! I went and bought groceries in person and paid for it in person, so what is this charge? My bank said that I subscribed for something last month and forgot to cancel it. Even the natural deodorant I buy online want me to subscribe to them! If you add everything up it's going to be thousands, I had to remind myself and husband to cancel subscription if we're not using it because it all ads up in the end. I cancelled prime today I realized I only kept it to watch supernatural and the boys which I am almost done with, I was paying £12.99 for ad free and we barely watched prime.
