The 21st century sucks.

The owner of the pub put on a short video of footage of the town in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Our little town used to have a carnival day each year called Treat Day when each school, church and union would have a carnival float, often depicting scenes from the Bible or folklore, mostly made up of children. The Salvation Army band would lead followed by the float honouring the elected carnival queen for that year, then the local regiment, and then the floats and then anyone who wanted to join in, often in their Sunday best. Some years it was sunny, other years it rained, but it looks like everyone made the best of it in the spirit of fun.

Things like this could never happen now. People would cry sexism over the Carnival Queen, the boys being knights or the girls being maids. People would complain about religious themes instead of appreciating the effort that had gone into the costumes and floats, people would probably cry racism about the depiction of the three wise men 😂, and I’m sure they’d come up with other objections that wouldn’t occur to me.

Apparently we live in a better world now. Frankly I don’t see it.

I wish our society was more communal again. It would be nice to feel part of a community.
@JimboSaturn We’ve certainly lost something that connects us, in the spirit of “progress”.

@blokeinpub Agreed
People are too busy staring at their phones to be bothered with fun.
