I Appreciate the Little Things In Life

i am in library on computer. there is a meeting of a homeowners association behind me. they are loud and obnoxious and just complaining and gossiping and ratting people out and blah blah blah. big surprise its a bunch of old farts that are retired or into real estate and its just bitching about raccoons and where people park their cars and just crap. I think HOAs are bullshit legal entities created to steal peoples money and homes and should be illegal. if you bought house it is yours and these crooks buy up best properties where people will want to live and work and take over. what is your opinion?

I've never understood the self imposed power of the HOA. Glorified narks. I always thought when you bought something with your own money, and owned it, it was yours to do what you will with it. Yes, there are some basic life rules that should be followed, no killing, no Slayer at 3am, keep your yard decent (in the front anyway).... basics.
The fact that you have to pay a group, to keep a watchful eye on your house, is disgusting. They're not keeping you safe, they're looking for a reason to site you. It does always seem to be an older group, with a whole lot of time to walk the neighborhood, and cast judgement. While their yards, full of red, white and black lava rock, with a pink coat of paint on their homes, are deemed acceptable and easy on the eyes.

see they have big money and they buy up large areas to develop where many people have to live. then you are stuck with the situation because of their schemes. many people have to be where they are and have limited options and these crooked property management companies take advantage. cuz all they have to do is rat people out, collect their money and get rich without serving any useful purpose or producing food or a useful product.thats uncivilized..@Heartlander:

@livesincar: Ouch! Having a developer with extra rights in a HOA can be like a kiss from the devil.

It's a painful experience unfortunately often learned the hard way.

@Heartlander: True, never have and most likely never would. I'm sure some people appreciate this type of group, but I'm not one of them.

Ohhh noooo ..... HOA's are a learning experience for neighbors learning to get together and accommodating one another' quirks and behaviors. As harsh as the discussions there may be, multiply that by 10 for city-wide town hall meetings, and another 10 when the state legislature gets together.

The bottom line is that there is no escape from the need to get along with one another.

this one is not seeming like that. they just talking about how to get rid of this person, sue this person, collect money and get homeless people arrested

@Heartlander: I've never seen or heard of one like that. In my experience they've all been run by a tiny cabal, determined to enforce their own prejudices and hatreds on their community - just for instance, the HOA I was in, in 2008, forbade anyone posting Obama signs in their yard (but McCain was just fine).

@firefall: The same thing happens at city hall, except it's a bigger brouhaha. Why do you elect self serving jerks to HOA positions?

I utterly loathe HOAs & the 2 times I've owned a house in the US has just reinforced my view of it. Mercifully, it's not a habit that has caught on outside the US as far as I'm aware.

Before purchasing real estate, I would suggest checking whether there's a HOA for that property. HOA's may have restrictions about almost everything and anything pertaining to that property. For example they can restrict the color of your house, or whether you can build a fence, or change the exterior appearance, etc., etc.

Oh .... some HOA's are GREAT! Like mine, usually. Our HOA handles the grass-cutting for the entire HOA as well as snow removal.
