It worked well before it was sold off by the Tories/Liberal coalition and was making the country a profit of over 300 million a year. We had owned it since the Tudor times. 馃槨

@Patientlywaiting Yes it was sold by a Conservative government but with Labour support: Tony Blair's government had wanted to give it to the Dutch company TNT, which like most of the Royal Mail's competitors is just not made for domestic deliveries.

No we had not owned it since Tudor times. The service we know, based on delivering irrespective of distance for a fixed and actually remarkably low fee given that distance-free aspect, was established by Roland Hill in the 19C,

Prior to that there was a Royal Mail of sorts, but limited and expensive; and obviously very slow as was all transport before the development of the railways.
