I Am at The Post Office And Hear Baby Chickens Peeping…

This is what happens when eggs get so expensive. People usually don’t order them in January

Yeah. Poor things would freeze to death up here in the north in the winter with our postal service. Even WITH heat packs.

I think if communities were smart, they could augment food for chickens from restaurant/fast food waste.

@LunarOrbit they are hungry peeping so much

@cherokeepatti Yeah. I raised egg chickens for a few years. Place near here (US Tractor Suppy) got chicks, ducklings, goslings and turkeys in the spring. I could not leave that place without a box of chicks. So many varieties…and lots of times they were clearing them out and almost giving them away. I had to stay away!!!

@LunarOrbit They’d sell like hotcakes now. People are fed up with the price of eggs and they’ll probably be a dollar a piece if this keeps going on.

@cherokeepatti I had upwards of 18 layers. Nobody wanted the eggs. I couldnt give them away. Now I get phone calls of people asking if I still had chickens.
(I loved easter eggers and different colour egg producers…some people dont like green or blue eggs. LoL)

@LunarOrbit Yeah I imagine they would want them now. But it’s not really cheap to buy grain to feed them. If you are a farmer and grow your grains it would be good.

@cherokeepatti True. You dont save much money…But if you free range, they get most of their protein from foraging. And my chickens would eat anything except citrus and onions…so they got all the old leftovers and freezerburnt foods.

@LunarOrbit yes they can eat cooked rice and oatmeal that is leftover and also veggie and fruit peel scraps. Would probably go to town on some over ripe bananas too.

@cherokeepatti Watermelon. They love it!!
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@LunarOrbit not in season right now though. Watermelon and cantaloupe, they’ll eat every last seed too, good for them. I fed mine dried cayenne peppers in gray when they wouldn’t lay eggs, they used the bathroom the next day and eliminated parasites and started laying the very next day. If I bought the medicine to deworm them I’d have to throw the eggs away for at least 2 weeks, too toxic.

@cherokeepatti wow. I had no idea about the dewormer. Good to know
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@LunarOrbit they had it for sale at the country convenience store about a mile from where I lived. I read the package and that’s what it said. Was so glad I used cayenne peppers. Also gave them black millet hay in the winter. The seeds are a lot tinier than yellow millet and they have to work to pick off the seeds, they love them. Supposed to be really healthy for them too.

@cherokeepatti Happy birds!!

@LunarOrbit a busy chicken is a happy chicken.
