Sure finishing a 1,700 square foot basement can be a beneficial investment for resale value, especially when done thoughtfully. If you’re really considering this option, really do some real careful planning carefully and researching the market in your area or the area where the home is to be sold. Sometimes it can help ensure a positive return on investment and a few times I seen it as a flop and a waste of money.
Research the demand for finished basements in your area. In regions where this is desirable, you're more likely to see a good return on investment. Like we did a basement many years ago and lost our ass on. because in that area nobody was doing them and it was in a flood zone area.
Goes to show. DO YOUR HOMEWORK FIRST before putting up any money. Don't be like us and learn the hard way.

Oh, one more thing. Keep in mind cost vs value Balance the total cost of finishing the basement against potential value added. Major renovations can sometimes exceed the home's overall value increase and you could be loosing money that way to.
