It was for us at our last home .. sold before the mess in '07 to-'09. We added ~1100 sq ft - Family room, bathroom, legal bedroom, mud room entrance from walkout, two storage closets, small office, unfinished storage area and a butler station/bar sink/minifridge and FR wired for surround sound. Cleared about $25-$30k. That's w me doing most of the work other than drywall and electrical. Finish was equivalent to rest of house.
Gotta be careful not to become the most expensive place in the neighborhood. Ours kept us about 15-20% below biggest homes w partially finished basement.

@WoWgirll We were not doing it to make money .. to make home work better for us after having kids .. but I was being careful to keep things making $$ sense. With garage space in yours .. likely best to limit the finished space to 1/2 or so of the sqft, but you need that research to know. Sounds like you have some $$ range to work with to make it worth checking out.
