We used to have one, but we updated our heating system from oil to natural gas. And eventually the old oil tank started to drip and stink, so we had it removed.
The heating system people said to be sure to remove the filler pipe as well; there were horror stories about an oil delivery going to the wrong address and 100 gallons of oil being pumped down an unterminated pipe and flooding a basement.

There was one very large one in the house I grew up in. I do wonder if it’s still there, the tank not the house of course. I can’t imagine how they would have gotten it out.

There’s no point in having more than one. My neighbors tank ruptured and they were out of their home for over two months.

I know a few people living in a village with no piped gas supply so do use oil-fired heating and bottled or bulk-tank lpg (or electricity) for cooking.
Each home has only one oil-tank though, and as far as I know none have basements or cellars so the tank is in a bund in the garden.

My parents had an oil furnace but they finally changed over to natural gas.
They had 1 tank that was underground.

@SomeMichGuy yes I’m in the NE US. And in summer I need AC. I rather it be cold. But that may change when I get older.
