If you were told today that your landlord or agent required you to vacate and you had to find a new place to rent could you afford to?

I couldn't. I live pay to pay but am trying to make some changes to alleviate that and live more like month to month (two pays or more ahead).

My rent is cheap by current market rates since the covid bs has made Australian property prices skyrocket and the portion of properties owned as investments increased since affording a property to live in as owner/occupier (not renting) is a lot harder.

If I had to leave where I am now I would not be able to rent anything that's less than about 1.5 times my weekly rent and that's in the area I live now (which is a cheap area already).

I consider myself lucky for having located a senior living gated community. My apt. is approx $600 for a one bedroom, one bath and balcony that is quite attractive with hardwood floors and all the amenities. It's quiet and double gated for safety. This apt. would likely go for at least one thousand five hundred otherwise.

@Grateful4you Average rent for a small normal 2 or 3 br house here is between $400 and $600 (A$) a week (in Sydney it would 2+ times that amount for any basic rental). I've been renting where I am now since mid 2018 and the owner hasn't put rent up much in that time but if it did get jacked up a lot, or I had to relocate, I'd be in a pickle.

@zonavar68 Sounds fairly comparable and sadly for many, totally out of reach. We now have in Ca. what we call the "Working homeless" People working full time in average paying jobs but having to live in their vans or cars because like in Sydney rents are way out of reach for the average consumer. It's a tragic disgrace.
